2019 Golden Crusader Award

The Golden Crusader Award honors individuals who have given years of time and talent to support the Cathedral students, staff and mission.  This year's recipients, Tom and Trish Bruce, are a perfect example of this.

Tom and Trish Bruce are both originally from the St. Cloud area and were high school sweethearts. Married in St. Paul's Church in 1986, where Trish has been a lifetime member, they established roots here in 1991 where they raised their two kids, Briana Bruce '08 and TJ Bruce '11 - both Cathedral graduates.

Serving both Cathedral and the St. Cloud community at large, the impact that the Bruces have had on countless individuals is immeasurable. You may know them from their ministries at St. Paul's, where they have served on Parish Council, as sacristans, eucharistic ministers, event planners/volunteers, and have helped with facilities. Or perhaps you know them from Anna Marie’s Alliance, where they have brought food and cooked meals regularly since 2012. Maybe you've crossed paths with them through Catholic Charities, where they are Circle of Hope members, or the St. Cloud Country Club Board of Directors.

The Bruces have also made a huge impact on youth in the St. Cloud community, as well. Tom has coached Central MN Youth Soccer and they've served on the Board of Directors for the St. Cloud Figure Skating Club - Tom as a past President and Trish as the Ice Show and Testing Chair. And then there's hockey. Tom actually played on the 1981 DIII National Tournament Team at Concordia College before going on to coach hockey. He was the head coach of Fargo North High School when they brought home the 1982 State Championship. In St. Cloud, he has coached the St. Cloud Youth Hockey Team and he has been the Cathedral High School Varsity Hockey Team Assistant Coach since 2005, helping them achieve six State Tournament appearances and finally take home the 2019 State Class A Championship last season! His legacy in hockey includes 72% wins in over 400 varsity games and has earned him Section Assistant Coach of the Year three times and the Jim Michaud Award.

Perhaps most notable is what they are doing for Cathedral's future.

Tom's architect background is extensive, currently serving as Senior Vice President for Design and Build at Rice Companies, Inc., where he's been for a cummulative of 15 years, and previously working at Winkelman Building Corporation. He's been a Diocese Building Commission Member since 2007, and has been a Cathedral Building Committee Member since 2012 – guiding us throughout the entire process of our new building addition. He has given countless volunteer hours to help make this dream - the first new academic building on the Cathedral campus in 52 years - a reality.

It is our sincere privilege and honor to be presenting both Tom and Trish Bruce with this distinguished Golden Crusader Award.
