Guatemala Mission Trip

We are so excited to have another opportunity to partner with Thrivent Financial/Thrivent Builds and Habitat International this summer.  Mrs. Miley (Spanish teacher) along with five parents/chaperones are joining fourteen Cathedral students on another Guatemala adventure, departing August 1, 2019.  Seven students who participated last year will be returning, along with 7 students new to the project.

This year's group will again be building smokeless stoves and latrines for families near San Lucas, Toliman.  In anticipation of our arrival, these families are making brick by hand for the stoves, and building a base for the latrines we will build.

Stay tuned as we share the daily highlights of our adventure with our 2019 Guatemala Mission Trip Blog, and please, keep us in your prayers!

By Larkin Vangsness, Cathedral Class of 2020:

There are many aspects of Cathedral that I enjoy; the athletics, academics, and activities. But something that really sticks out to me is the access it gives the students to the world.

Through Cathedral, I was able to go to Guatemala in the Summer of 2018. Guatemala taught me so many things about culture, life, people, and myself.

While we were there, we were able to attend mass and sight see, but most importantly, we worked. We built stoves and latrines in villages outside of San Lucas Toliman. The families we worked with live in homes with one or two beds, dirt floors, and no electricity. Even though they didn’t have much, they were so happy and welcoming. I’ve never seen a group of people work so hard.

Three languages, two countries, but all human, and that was the best part of the trip. I would have never been able to experience this trip without Cathedral. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities Cathedral has given me.
