A lot of parents have asked "What does Parent Council do?"  Well we are responsible for planning and organizing appreciation events for faculty and staff. Two times a year we plan and serve conference meals for faculty and staff. We also host a Christmas party and give gifts to the faculty and staff. Every month a different grade level hosts a Teacher Appreciation Day which includes all kinds of delicious treats made by our fabulous Cathedral parents. We publish and distribute the student telephone directory. Teachers come to us and request the Parent Council to sponsor certain things that the teachers need for their classes but are not in their budget. We hold monthly meetings with guest speakers from CHS to keep us informed on what is new and changing in our school. Our monthly meetings are always the third Tuesday of every month at 11:30 a.m.. Please feel free to have lunch with us by either bringing your own lunch or you can enjoy a fabulous meal prepared by the Cathedral cafeteria.  Please join us when our time line fits into your calendar. There is absolutely no commitment on your part to be at every meeting, although we would love to see you as often as possible.

But there is so much more that Parent Council can do. I think the questions we need to ask are; What are our goals? Are we making a difference? Are we accomplishing something that will be significant and enduring to our school? How far will our influence extend?

I would like to see Parent Council make a lasting difference to our school and our children. I believe every parent has something that he or she can give. Remember that contributions aren't always material or financial. Be a part of  Parent Council by sharing your time, talent, experience and wisdom.

Our next Parent Council meeting will be November 13th at 11:30 a.m. (Please note the change in our calendar because of Thanksgiving.) Please check out The Parent Council link on the Cathedral website for information along with the minutes from all of our meetings and the following month's Agenda,  including the dates and times for all of our meetings.

At the November meeting we will be planning and discussing the Christmas party and also the Christmas gifts that we (all the parents of Cathedral) will be giving to the faculty and staff in December.

Please remember that you can still make a donation to the faculty Christmas fund through the Parent Council at anytime. You can make checks payable to CHS Parent Council and let us know with a note on your check that is for the faculty Christmas gift fund.

Thank you so much and I hope this gives you a better vision as to what the Cathedral Parent Council is all about for our school and our children.

Many blessings to you all.
Theresa Rudnicki
Cathedral Parent Council President

Guest speaker- Jim Steve, Sergeant with the St. Cloud police. Supervises the school resource officers. Although the parochial schools do not have resource officers at this time, any time that a parochial school asks for assistance the St. Cloud will respond and do training. Officers working to develop relationships with students. They speak on: bullying, sexting, and citizenship. There are times when students would be asked to stay in the building even if there is a fire alarm or bomb threat due to increased threat outside of the building by snipers. Public schools are asked to do 5 lockdowns per year. The average length of a school shooing is 8 minutes. Sergeant Steve recommends books by Dr. Walsh. A youth crossover program is offered in St. Cloud which is a team of judicial and mental health professionals dealing with juvenile offenses. The Keys program is offered to 6th graders in our community. This program works on self- esteem, drugs and can be individualized to our community. The sergeant feels some of the biggest issues for 9th graders are interpersonal skills, not a lot of drugs at the high school. Alcohol is not a huge problem right now in our community. Prescription drugs are being seen in the 7th and 8th grade. Heroin is big in our community right now. There is a curfew for 15-16 year olds it is 10 pm on school nights and 11 pm on non -school nights. For 17 year olds it is 11 pm on school nights and 12 am on non- school nights. For 18-21 year olds with their first minor offense there is a diversion program which has a class and fine. This program has been very effective. SCSU checks arrest records weekly and if students are arrested there are called in to the office.

Nominations are being taken for new Parent Council board members – President, Treasurer and Secretary positions are all open for next year. Please contact Theresa Rudnicki if interested.

Staff treats are being done on March 20th by the 8th grade. They will be providing pies.
7th grade will be doing treats in April. Sue B. will coordinate this.

April 4th Parent Council will be providing a meal for staff during conferences. If you are able to help out or provide a dessert please contact Theresa Rudnicki.

The parents present at today’s meeting would like to see CHS work in connection with the St. Cloud police department to get our safety plan up to date with others in the community (Crossroads, hospital, CentraCare and public schools). It would be beneficial to work with the department so that common language and procedures were used throughout St. Cloud. The St. Cloud police department would be willing to meet regularly with CHS to discuss community safety issues. Parents would like to see CHS have a dedicated phone line for security purposes, locked doors and access to training provided by the St. Cloud police department. The Sergeant indicated that this training would be provided at no cost to CHS as it is a part of our community.

Next meeting at Ciatti’s 11:00 on April 16th.
